Most people think of the Florida Keys as a summer destination. The locals know better. Winter is one of the absolute best times to fish Islamorada — and here's why.
Why Fish in Winter?
- Fewer crowds. No waiting on the dock, easier charter bookings, smaller party boat groups.
- Cooler, calmer water. Winter fronts can flatten the ocean for days — perfect offshore conditions.
- Active fish. Cooler temps push bait and game fish into predictable patterns over the reef structure.
- The weather is perfect. 70-75°F in December–February. It's peak season for a reason.
What's Biting in Winter
Offshore: Mahi-mahi, wahoo, sailfish, blackfin tuna, kingfish. Winter is peak mahi and wahoo season — these fish are abundant and aggressive.
Reef & Wreck: Yellowtail snapper, mutton snapper, grouper, amberjack, cobia. The reef loads up in winter.
Inshore/Flats: Bonefish, permit, redfish. The flats fish are active year-round, and winter backcountry trips can be exceptional.
Party Boat: Captain Michael's three daily trips target reef fish — all tackle included, $100/person.
